Description
Welcome to Mediterranean Diet for People with Parkinson’s
Mediterranean Diet for Parkinson’s is a dedicated nutrition education programme designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. This programme recognises the crucial role that plant based diets play in the context of Parkinson’s and aims to empower people through evidence-based dietary education.
The Mediterranean Diet and Parkinson’s
Current research indicates that several components of Mediterranean-style diets can contribute to improved quality of life for people with Parkinson’s. These dietary patterns may not only help individuals live better with the condition, but there is also potential that they could play a role in slowing the progression of the disease.
Mediterranean Diet for Parkinson’s has been designed by registered dietitians, drawing on the latest scientific evidence on the Mediterranean diet and the MIND (Mediterranean–DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diet to ensure the programme is both accurate and effective. The focus of the programme is to provide practical nutrition education, supporting the wellbeing of individuals with Parkinson’s and those who care for them.
Support and Access
The programme is delivered in cohorts, ensuring that every participant receives support from our registered dietitians. This includes access to the “Ask the Dietitian” chat support group and participation in three live webinars. Each participant is granted three months of access, allowing them to progress through the programme at a comfortable, self-directed pace.
Additional Resources
In addition to educational content and live support, participants will receive a variety of resources. These materials are designed to guide and support positive changes in dietary habits, helping individuals make informed decisions for their health. They also receive our new Mediterranean diet tracker.
People who took part in our market test pilot (funded by a Parkinson’s UK Innovation grant) of the programme reported:
- Improvement in their understanding of nutrition for their Parkinson’s.
- Improvement in their Mediterranean diet score.
- More confidence in speaking with health care professionals about their dietary needs.
- Improvements in constipation.
